Last year we decided to work on a new concept called Trials for Charity where new members can elect to donate a $5 trial fee to a great cause. We partnered with a leading local charity HYPA (which stands for Helping Young People Achieve) and our new members helped us raise $200! Thank you to everyone who supported the initiative.
We all know how hard it is for young people to get through the day if things aren’t right at home or they haven’t had anything to eat in the morning. It’s even harder to be motivated to learn when they don’t know where they’ll be sleeping or if they have enough for dinner at night.
HYPA knows that when a young person is experiencing homelessness, that’s usually just one of many challenges they’re up against. Our donations went to support the HYPA Breakfast Club, which Lauren Dimas, Head of Partnerships at HYPA says makes a big difference. “Thanks to Matt, Selena and the Edufolios members we’ve been able to provide 200 extra breakfasts for the young people accessing our services.”
A typical breakfast at HYPA might be a bowl of cereal, a glass of juice and two slices of toast with spreads. But the Breakfast Club is about more than just a nutritious meal – HYPA clients have access to a warm shower, toilets, a change of clothes, phone chargers, computers and a safe space to relax. Here’s what some young people had to say about the Breakfast Club:
“It gives us shelter, food, someone to talk to, and a safe place to take a nap during the day”
“Often we would come and get breakfast, lunch and dinner sorted. It helped to get us through a rough time.”
“I have never been turned down or told no to here.”
“This space makes a big difference, it’s really significant.”
On any given night, more than 1,400 young people are experiencing homelessness in South Australia1. HYPA offers accommodation services for over 3,500 young people every year. They work to ensure young people have a safe and stable environment from which they can achieve their education and employment goals.
